fish fryimageWelcome back to Fish Fry Nomading for the advanced learner.

Hopefully, by now, everyone has heard the report Rachel Lippman did on 90.7 KWMU celebrating St. Louis Fish Frys.

If not, click here!

Yes that was me in the second segment of the story. It was a great honor to be chosen as someone to be a part of St. Louis Fish Frys and why those of us who aren’t even Catholic attend them.

I certainly hope everybody who does do the fish fry thing approves of the silly things I said and that we’re all still good, because sometimes it’s hard to be an expert on things that you just kind of do for yourself.

Waiting sucks.

Waiting sucks.

Well, this week we went to the site of last year’s Fish Fry Phail, St. Matthias in South County off of Lemay Ferry, but Dubowl Lanes.

What we didn’t know last year is that they only have a fish fry every other week.

With their dinners being every other week, it certainly had my hopes up that this was going to be the best thing I had ever eaten in my life.

Perhaps I was setting the bar a bit high on this one, but regardless, I was hoping for a delightful meal right?

We arrived very late in the game, about 6:15 p.m., and there was a line waiting for us that seemed miles long, thankfully, t hey had a good system set up and we were eating in less than a half an hour.

They were also smart enough to have a beer vendor at the end of the line. This was great until I decided to go get some beer after getting my fish.

Om nom nom.

Om nom nom.

Look up and see my fish.

We did have to wait a bit in order to actually be served, as we were waiting for more fish to be cooked, but hey, fresh fish.

My combo plate was $7.50 for two pieces of cod and four pieces of shrimp and that is not a bad deal if I do say so myself. Beverages and desserts were extra.

I chose my sides carefully: green beans and mac’n’cheese.

CLOSER!

CLOSER!

There were no fries to be had.

My green beans and mac were both cold, but they had a good flavor, but it would’ve been nicer had they been warmer…or just warm in general. The food was kept warm by cans of sterno in aluminum foil trays.

The fish though, oh man oh man, it was wonderful. The fact that I had to wait ten minutes for them to had it to me though is probably why it was so good.

Fresh, crispy, and perfectly cooked.  The pieces of fish were a bit small, but in the end, I had no complaints about either the fish or the shrimp as they were both excellent!

E-J’s Take: Please eat my hushpuppy. (I took this to mean that she did not want it as she wanted to save that room for fish.)
